The October 2022 issue brought together Florida claim assistance, Hurricane Ian updates, policyholder duties after a loss, and seasonal property protection. The original announcement and both newsletter pages are preserved below.

Florida Claim Assistance

The issue announced that Hillis was licensed in Florida and invited home and business owners with property damage to call (954) 587-5600 for claim assistance.

Hurricane Ian and the Carolinas

The October Storm Center reproduced Hurricane Ian Advisory 31A, describing tropical-storm-force winds along much of the Carolina coast and the storm-surge and hurricane conditions expected at the time. This is a historical 2022 advisory, not a live weather alert.

Storm Preparation Checklist

  • Confirm property insurance coverage
  • Clear the yard of furniture and debris
  • Have an emergency food and water supply
  • Remove dead or loose tree branches
  • Be prepared to shut off power when directed and safe to do so

Storm Preparation Resources

The issue listed CDC and weather.gov resources, hurricanes.gov, and severe-weather alerts for Florida, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina.

Duties After a Loss

The original issue explained that an insurance policy contains conditions the insured or their representative must satisfy after a loss. Its seven-part checklist covered:

  • Prompt notice: Give notice of a loss to the insurer or its agent.
  • Theft reporting: Notify the police when the loss involves theft.
  • Property protection: Protect the property from further damage.
  • Cooperation: Cooperate with the insurer's investigation of the claim.

InventoryPrepare an inventory of damaged personal property, including quantity, description, location in the home, and actual cash value.

Inspection and documentsPresent damaged property before repairs, provide requested records and documents, and attend an examination under oath when required.

Proof of lossThe 2022 issue described providing a signed, sworn proof-of-loss statement within 60 days of the insurer's request. Actual obligations and deadlines depend on the policy and applicable requirements; the archived checklist is not a substitute for reviewing them.

The issue encouraged property owners to seek guidance through the claim process so that overlooked duties after a loss do not compromise potential claim payments.

Five Halloween Property Protection Tips

  • Use flameless candles
  • Keep porch lights on
  • Park the car in the garage
  • Install motion-sensor lights
  • The original issue also suggested covering the mail slot

Referral Program

The issue invited readers to refer friends, neighbors, and family members with property damage and described a referral fee when the claim was settled. Refer to the current Hillis referral program for current terms.
